On one of my computers, the disk drive activity indicator has gone missing. Caps Lock, Num Lock, and other icons show up when selected, but the drive activity is MIA....Any ideas?

Hi Ronald,

In the TrayStatus Settings > Status Indicators tab, do you have "Show Hard Drive Activity" enabled?

Thanks!

Yes, it is selected. It used to work, but I noticed it no longer appeared several months ago. I played with it then and added the CPU and memory activity icons with no difficulty, but could never make the disk activity reappear. Traystatus called for an update today (along with the December Windows 10 21H2 updates) and I fiddled wifh it again, but could not get the disk status to appear.

Hi Ronald,

Could you send me over a screenshot of the TrayStatus Settings > Status Indicators tab?

Thanks!

Sure. Attached are screenshots of the Tray Settings Status Indicator tab and the taskbar with the hidden icons showing.

Hi Ronald,

Thanks for sending that over, that's really strange! Could you send me a debug log?

  • On the TrayStatus Settings > Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "L1: Log Minimal" and click Apply
  • Reproduce the issue and note the time so we'll know where to check in the log file
  • Click the "Export Info to File" button on the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Reply with the file attached
  • Disable debug logging after sending the log

Thanks!

OK... Before I started I uninstalled and re-installed ver 4.6... no change in display. I enabled the logging and then went to the status indicator tab and disabled and re-enabled some icons including the disk activity. The other icons came and went depending on what was selected, but the disk activity icon never appeared. I then unchecked the 3 options under disk activity and when I clicked Apply, an error message came up which I saved and put at the top of the log file. If the "Only show drives that are available" box was checked, the error message would no longer appear. Hope all this helps troubleshoot what is going on!

Best regards & Merry Christmas...

Hi Ronald,

It looks like you sent over the troubleshooting info, which isn't quite what we're looking for. Can you follow the steps above, and send over the .zip file created?

Thanks!

It looks like TrayStatus is having trouble creating the performance counter to read the hard drive data. I have 2 ideas I would like to try.

#1: Can you open the TrayStatus Settings window and on the "Status Indicators" tab click the "Fix Performance Counters" button? Then restart TrayStatus and see if you get the hard drive tray icons?

#2: Can you try to add it manually and we can see where it's failing? In the TrayStatus Settings window on the "Status Indicators" tab can you try adding a "custom performance counter"? Click the "add" button and see if you have the category "PhysicalDisk" or "LogicalDisk"?

Thanks!

I tried both. The first suggestion had no effect. The second suggestion would not work as there is no Logical Disk or Physical Disk selection on the drop-down.
I've attached a new file. Most of my activity was around 2000 hrs (I keep this computer on UTC).

That is very strange! I found this article that sounds very similar to your issue, can you check the registry setting from the article and see if your counters are disabled as well?

Jon,
Thanks! That worked! The Disk Activity icon re-appeared after I changed the registry value and rebooted.

Have a Happy New Year
